R. Mark's Story

As many of you know, when I was a teenager, I had an interest in antique cars, often driving my black 1919 Model T Ford to school. Later, I bought a 1967 Mercury Cougar that I drove regularly. At the time, I lived in Daisy and worked around the farms in the area and at the Daisy Trading Post, the town’s general store. I dated only one girl, who I later married and we had a handsome boy child. Some of you might remember that I took classes in bookkeeping and accounting, journalism and photography. I enjoyed performing on the stage and theatre, and I developed an interest in flying small, single engine, general aviation aircraft. Over the years, I bought two vintage airplanes, a 1949 Cessna 170-A and an experimental certified 1960 Stits Playboy two seater, to learn flying and aircraft design, and to learn aircraft mechanics. Immediately after high school, I enlisted in the United States Air Force as a Radio Communications Specialist. I served between 1973 and 1977 in the USAF and the Maryland Air National Guard. I attended the USAF School of Applied Aerospace Science, where I received a diploma with credits equivalent to an Associate Degree. After tech school, I completed extensive combat and survival training, and was taught to use numerous military weapons and hand-to-hand self defense. I’m honored to be a Vietnam Era service veteran. Shortly before my service discharge, my high school love and I went through an emotional and painful divorce. A few years later, I remarried and was blessed with a beautiful girl child. About 1980, I bought a lovely Victorian era home in a small town on Maryland’s eastern shores, near Delaware. I opened the Coney Island Ice Cream Parlour, took a part-time job as a Radio Disc Jockey, for owner Phil Adams, and helped a neighbor friend to deliver fresh baked sliced bread and rolls, in nearby Dover and Seaford Delaware. In the 1990’s, with communications technologies evolving from an analog era to a digital era, I updated my tech training by attending the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland, earning a News Journalism diploma following a 600-hour course in 9-months. My studies included Print Journalism, Marketing, Promotions, Advertising, ENG (Electronic News Gathering) Systems, TV Camera and Radio Control Board usage, color and audio balancing, overall functions, and package presentation. estigator to help pay my tuition. I was offered, and I accepted, a contract position as the Emcee for Premier Pageants to present, on stage, teen and women’s pageants at many of the most prestigious venues, and flying to every major city throughout the United States. I was employed by stations WXVA, WTHU, WFMD and WFRE as a News Reporter, a News Anchor, a Talk Radio Host and Producer, a Programming Director, a Promotions Director, a Broadcast Sales Representative and Marketing Specialist, to name some of the positions I have held. My employers included Heritage Broadcasting, Walmer Media Group, Gibbins Broadcasting, Capstar Atlantic and Clear Channel Worldwide. I became a union member of AFTRA (the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists) and SAG (the Screen Actors Guild). I made good use of every opportunity to meet and introduce on stage, many of the biggest personalities in the music industry. They include Alan Jackson, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, and the Dixie Chicks, to mention a few. As an Actor, I have worked in film scenes with Alan Rickman, Kera Sedgwick, John Travolta, Ice Cube, Chris Rock, Daniel Craig, Robert Duvall and Nichole Kidman, to name some. I continue to work in my semi-retirement as a Professional Actor and Voice Talent for theatre, film and radio productions. Additionally, I have performed various complex character roles for the training academies of the United States Secret Service and the United States Capital Police. I continue to collect vintage horse drawn carriages, some rare vintage horseless carriage automobiles, and some cars, trucks and motorcycles that represents several decades of evolution. I reside in Maryland to stay close to my children and grand-children. I recently purchased an historic investment property near Mount Airy that needs a lot of investing. But, it brought me back to the area, just in time to grow older around old acquaintances. My grown children, from my first and second marriages, reside in Bel Air, Maryland, with their children. My current spouse is from the Philippines. We have grown sons and grand-children there. One grand-son is attending college in Japan. Another grand-son is a camp councilor with the YMCA. One grand-daughter is great in art and graphic design, but wants to learn auto mechanics. Another grand-daughter is learning guitar music.
